John, I don't know how much management system documentation HMRAV has, and I'm not about to tell you how to run your club business. However it seems to me there are two aspects to Historic Racing - the MA Rules, and the way promoters run events. I don't believe there is anything in the MA rules which prescribes how promoters will organise events, other than championships. I suggest that perhaps there might be a need for an Event Guidelines Manual to be either maintained through HMRAV, or through cooperation of all Australian promoters with MA. Events such as Inca have been run in Australia to George Beale's rules. We have been talking about Single Cylinder Aircooled Class, 650 Sidecar Class, Clubmans Class, 750 Pushrod class. The problem is that if ever any of these ideas actually get up and running, the formats won't be 'set in concrete'. Simply getting cooperation between Bob Blythe, Phillip Island and Winton, to run an Inca Series is almost impossible. I believe an Event Guidelines Manual could help the situation by providing better definition and a sound base for improvement.

John, I think what is needed is a manual comprising a set of data (specification) sheets, one for each type of event. we could use headings such as Eligibilty Requirements, Acceptable Capacities, Event Format, Eligible Machines, References and Overseas Compatible Classes. For example BEARS events would be specified on the basis of the OZBEARS RACING rules, with any additions HMRAV might like to make. Bucket events would be specified on the basis of the Bucket Association Rules, with HMRAV additions, to get the grid numbers up (perhaps you might include 80cc Watercooled motors). If more than one period is involved in an event, it should be stated on the sheet. The Inca rules would make up one sheet, and when we come to talk to different promoters, if ever we actually run a series, we would have an Australian accepted format for the events. It doesn't matter how many of the event specifications are actually used, what matters is that the Event Guidelines Manual would give a range of choices, which we can choose from for any meeting. Winton Motorcycle Club is discussing running a 'Teams race', which will be in the form of a relay race - passing a sash between four bikes per team. we will need to write up a specification for the event, but I don't think Winton Motor Raceway will keep it as a 'Controlled Document', we're just not that smart. |
