I'd love to hear some comments on the recent Australian Champs at Winton. Where are the race results? Was it successful? Did running period 5 work well, or was it at the expense of the other classes? Did the two race championship formula work? Were there the usual eligibility problems? How did the MA relationship pan out? What classes were best supported?

Gday Bill - I raced a P5 unlimited [CB1100] at Winton. The meeting was a success as far as the classes and the championships went for most classes, despite the bumblings of the HMRAV people. I won't be voicing anything new by saying that they couldn't have been worse organised. They couldn't get garage bookings correct, leaving people who paid for carports with other people in them, coudn't organise the gates to be oppend on time, forcing the breaking of the chain etc etc. They had not reserved the track for the thursday , the day before practice and qualifying. This obviously creates an unfair advantage to those for whom Winton is a home track. I got there on friday am, missed my one and only practice session due to carb problems, [which could have been sorted on a thursday practice day] and still having the carb problem only qualified on the 4th row with a sadly running engine. I would have thought it'd be a matter of course and common courtesy to reserve a track for private practice for the day before you have to qualify for an Aust Championships.
There was a support race on friday, we lined up onto the grid where we were shown to our grid positions, only to be shown the lights and off we went !! NO SIGHTING OR WARMUP LAP !! How NEGLIGENT IS THIS !!?? Let's just say that WORDS were said the next morning at riders briefing to the officials, who even then only wanted to give warmup laps to the P5 field and not to everyone, until they reconsidered with only minutes to go before bikes were due out.
They didn't brief their flaggies as to how to use all the flags, leaving front runners to have many near misses of backmarkers who were not shown the blue flag !. Upon my complaint, I was told that that's how it is. Now, I applaud ALL the flaggies for their help - this is not their fault, but the organisers'.
I can't comment on eligibility for any classes other than P5. P5 was overall not too bad, but the lack of requests for eligibility proofs from the appointed eligibility official, Chris Price, resulted in a number of debates over eligibility. One TZ350 with a H model enigne was withdrawn from competition and an UL P5 bikes' discs caused contoversy in the pits.
The fact that all the races were had in the given time I think was more a matter of good luck rather than good planning. There were far too many classes contested, and this would have been increased by at least 2 had they had enough entries for Classic 125 and P5 250s, which were not run due to insufficient entries. Mind you, HMRAV didn't bother to call those entered in these classes before the event to tell them so, but simply told them ON THE DAY ! Most of these competitors could have brought other bikes for another class, had they known, but missed out on any title chance due to a complete lack of communications.
All in all, the event was a successful showcase of Historic racing with over 300 entries, but certainly showed how an event can benefit from better organisation..
If I have mdae any errors in fact, please let me be corrected, HMRAV .....
