I would like to raise the question 'Is MA the controlling body for motorcycle sport in Australia or is it still a union'? Up until a few years ago one of the worst things a rider could do was compete at a 'black' meeting. Under the Trade Practises Act discrimination against such people by 'controlling bodies' is apparently limited, in what can be done. So what is the situation with running events without MA approval, but where adequate insurance cover has been obtained?

In responce to Alfonso comment of the 15 June 2001. MA has not been a "Union" for several years,(1992) and you are correct they cannot stop you riding at any meeting that you may wish to. However when you take out an MA competition licence each year you do sign that you will abide by the rules of MA. The first rule in the GCR's is rule 1.1.1.1 C)The Rules, and any detemination made under them and in accordance with them, bind all controlling bodies and all participants in the sport. As a rider no one can stop you riding at a "Black" meeting if you wish to, but would it be morale correct to do so? As to insurance cover, lets hope that the black meeting held this weekend has insurance to cover what has happened. MA are within there right to not pick riders for teams which go overseas to compete for Australia or grant them wild card entries,to ride at G.P. meetings held in Australia from riders who have ridden at black meetings.
Reckless.

I consider riders generally have had good value from MA over the years. However the democratic aspect of the organisation and the various clubs has always left a little to be desired. It is essential that we all take an interest in the way our sport is run. I suggest MA is very responsive to criticism and constructive suggestion. This forum provides an opportunity for both. It provides another pathway to the normal, in which your club sends a rep to the MA meetings. I believe we should all work within the system, however 'black' meetings might not be so bad, if they are controlled to similar guidelines to the MA rules.
