One of our historic racers in Queensland recently wrote to MAQ suggesting that they should consider reviewing licence costs for different disciplines, with the cost in each discipline reflecting the level of claims paid out. A response (published in the MAQ newsletter) accused historic road racing of having one of the worst safety records in the sport (per lisensee). MAQ referred to three deaths in historic road racing in Australia. I wonder if anyone could fill me in on the accuracy of this claim, and if they did occur what were the circumstances?

Do other clubs think this is an issue worth persuing? We believe we are losing a lot of riders due to the high cost of licences (particularly people who only want to compete a couple of times a year), and we also believe that we are subsidising much higher risk sections of the sport. In Queensland, to my knowledge there has never been a claim associated with an historic road race meeting.

I can't remember any deaths in historic racing in Victoria. In fact when the real historic era was in progress in the fifties and sixties there were no deaths at all in Victoria, for a period of about twenty five years after the unfortunate incident where a rider was killed at Bandiana.
Another thing, we no longer use 'pudding basin' helmets, so the likelihood of getting fatally injured through items entering below the helmet is lessened ( as happened I think to Fergus Anderson).

Only one I know of was at Broadford Vic. About late 1980's early 1990 Post Classic rider, he ran off and was run over by another rider, and the only other was in South Australia at Mac Park, C grader on a 250 production bike at Hartwell round middle of 1990's. He was a new rider and got mixed up in a heavy dice for the hair pin. I saw both happen!!

Re Historic Racing Safety Record.
I thought the response from the General Manager of MAQ in the Newsletter was fair and offered a balanced view as to why licences are the price they are in New Zealand compared to Queensland.
Our Insurance costs being the main difference with our New Zealand Cousins not having the Insurance burden that we have.
However I cannot recall a single death resulting in an Insurance claim within the last 6 years.
The only claim that I can recall involving a Historic Rider occurred in Perth during the 1998 Australian Historic Championships when a spectator was hit just prior to the start of the Junior Classic Final.
I hasten to add the spectator was in an area that he should not have been in, but that has not stopped him making a claim.
